The original release, a hasty effort to put together in a single screenshot a wide range of statistical information sourced from varied bibliographic sources, from peer-reviewed scientific papers published in varied journals, official statistics from FAO and governmental forestry agencies... to grey literature. Impossible without our inquisitive friend Dennis Wilstermann (University Hamburg) who once wondered: "How many hectares of eucalypt trees do really exist around the world?".

Improved version of the original release, with reviewed and corrected figures after the kind input and comments from worldwide experts in varied fields of work related to these trees and from many kind collaborators around the globe. Includes the addition of extra geographic and historical data on Eucalyptus cultivation.

Impossible without the kind input of Arno van den Bos (University Utrecht), who put us on the worldwide eucalypt inventory track again to find out that quite probably the 20 million hectare threshold has been surpassed after yet another successful 2008 Eucalyptus planting campaign in South America. Which started the data review and update process to...

Hopefully ready on time for the WCF2009 - 13th World Forestry Congress , hopefully with a new layout and hopefully including as many as possible updated country reports on Eucalyptus cultivation. No matter if we make it to Buenos Aires or not, if ready, the map will make it!

Elaborating data

If things go well, GIT Forestry's Global Eucalyptus Map will no longer be a static "photograph" of eucalypt cultivated forests worldwide and will become a fully interactive map instead. Stay tuned!

Estimating global statistics for forestry resources is never an easy task. And any map summarising those statistics can only be as accurate as the original data are. Forestry inventory processes are very heterogeneous around the world, and updated results are not always available for a certain country at a given time. Hence, caution when reviewing these estimations is always necessary, as they just depict an approximate frame of an ongoing dynamic process.
